Getting waisted...High Waisted!

As you'll have heard in last weeks Cover Flatter Flaunt featuring gorgeous Emily Jayne  (to read click here) one of the best ways to really show off an hour glass shape is to wear outfits that nip you in at the waist.
I too am an hour glass shaped young lady and here are two looks I've created recently that do exactly that.
Two very different shaped skirts but they have one thing in common, they are high waisted.

First up is this white blazer, lime green tee and black pencil skirt combo.

Get this look

The second of the looks is this high waisted leather look skater skirt and high neck cream jumper.
High waisted skater skirts are amazing! They work for so many different body shapes as well as hourglass:
For rectangle (or commonly known although I don't like the term boy shape) it'll create curves.
For top heavy ladies, it'll balance out your top and bottom half
Also for you pear shaped ladies who want to cover up your hips the skater skirt is a great way to do it and show off the smallest part of your torso.

Get this look
I've changed the top for this look as we're coming into spring and a roll neck might be a little too toasty now. I also think the print adds some fun to the outfit.

I absolutely love my Nica satchel, I got it at last years clothes show live. It is the perfect size for all your essentials. And although it looks teeny, with all of the different sections and pockets you can fit more than you'd think in it!

***Steal my Style***

I have been so excited about taking my new In Love with Fashion jacket for it's first outing.
Gingham is very 'in' right now, and the long length of the jacket gives it a bit of a glam feel and to top it off it's also incredibly easy to wear.

LOVE - £36.00

This cut out RiverIsland shirt was a bit of a find in a RiverIsland sale last year.
I have tried to find something similar for you but really struggled.

I did however come across this RiverIsland number and although there is no cut out I really like the double button detail.

RiverIsland - £30.00

I teamed the white shirt and gingham jacket with black skinny jeans. Mine are from the Leigh range at TopShop, but any would work with this look.

TopShop - £38.00
To accessorise the outfit and for me the key pieces is this fabulous fedora hat from H&M.

H&M - £14.00

The large black clutch bag is Miss Selfridge but a little while ago. I found this one similar in size and has a fabulous 3D effect. It keeps with the monochrome feel and compliments the gingham superbly.
ASOS - £35.00
Finally to finish off the look and to add a little bit of colour, I wore a coral tone lipstick.

Rimmel  Coral in Gold - £4.99

***Steal my Style***

So ladies and gents, I've been doing a bit of online shopping recently (oops) and here is one of my purchases and how you can create my look.

Black Sweatshirt Andrew Jackson Dress

There isn't a whole lot more to say other than I absolutely love this dress, it's fun, comfy and funky.
The prices is also pretty amazing too!!!

Sheinside - £16.08

I let the dress do most of the talking so I only accessorised the outfit with these awesome cross earrings.

Earrings H&M - £7.99 (Not available online)
Because of the fur material at the bottom of the dress (which is SO fun), it runs the risk of making your bottom half a little bigger so to balance this out I wanted to keep the legs looking little and long.
To do this I wore black tights for a slimming effect and super high wedge shoe boots lengthening the legs and giving a casual/dressy look.
(Similar) NewLook - Black Suedette Wedge Shoe Boot - £19.99

I added a little colour with bright nails and this fabulous deep red lipstick.
Barry M - White Nail Polish - £2.99
Barry M - Yellow Nail Polish - £2.99

Lasting Finish - Kate Moss 03 - £5.49

Cover Flatter Flaunt

Introducing the gorgeous Emily Jane

So Emily Tell us a little bit about you...
I'm a blogger, personal stylist and freelance digital type. I'm a size 16, and I don't wear black!

I'm passionate about colour, and most of my styling work is focussed on encouraging women to bring more colour into their wardrobes and lives, and the positive impact this has! I really do think that fashion should be for everyone, no matter their size, shape or age, and that everyone can feel good about the way that they dress.

I love being self employed as it gives me the freedom to dress how I feel best - whether that means rocking up to a networking meeting in a sparkly jacket, or dying my hair lavender!

You can find me at...

What body shape are you?

Don't know what shape you are? Here's a simple step by step process to work it out:  What body shape are you?

What would you say is/are your problem area(s)?
To be honest I try not to talk/think negatively about my body. However, everyone has areas that need 'balancing' by what they wear (or not - it's totally up to the individual I say!) For me, they are my curvy upper arms, thighs, and tum. Rather than 'problem' areas, I just think of them as things I have to take into consideration when I'm shopping, just as I do my 'good' (!) bits.

What are your top tips for covering them?
I tend to go for dresses or tops with sleeves or wear a shrug/cardigan if they are sleeveless - but this is by no means all the time, if it's that hot, the arms come out!
I also prefer a midi length skirt to a mini, unless I'm wearing opaques in the Winter.

Ladies if you think midi's are the way forward for you there are some gorgeous midi skirts on the high-street right now....

TopShop - Pink bonded 3D felt skirt - £48.00

RiverIsland - Navy scarf print midi - £30.00
Next - Check Mesh Skirt - £48.00

RiverIsland - Black & White Animal Print Midi - £35.00

What are your top tips for flattering them?
Draping, soft fabrics tend to be more flattering over curves, so I steer clear of too much sharp tailoring (I learned that lesson when I used to have an office job and split the lining of every single pencil skirt I owned when I sat down!) As for my tum, a waistband that fits above it is a must for me, so on the odd occasion you see me in jeans or trousers, they'll come up to my natural waist - no hipster styles here which create a squidgy line across the middle of it!

Now...tell us about your best bits...

I love my curves!
Also I have quite a (proportionately) small waist which I enjoy showing off!

What are your top tips for really showing off/flaunting your best bits?
I also ALWAYS make sure that whatever I wear shows off my waist as it's my narrowest point. As such, you'll generally find me in a waist belt of some sort, or a fifties style sillhouette.
And again, it's all about the draping and soft fabrics!

Emily Jayne and I are the same body shape (hourglass) and I too use belts to nip me in at the waist and midi skirts that fan out from the waist...

What is your go to piece/shape of clothing?

I can never have too many knee length, nipped in waist, full skirted dresses in my wardrobe!

What is your favorite piece in your wardrobe?

My navy and gold lace print Vivienne Westwood dress. It's simply beautiful and has all of my favourite features in a dress! Nipped in waist, full skirt, drapey neckline, and pockets! Oh how I love a skirt or dress with pockets! I have worn it to death, so was amazing value on a cost per wear basis.

What's the favourite accessory you own?

Had to have a think about this one, and I'm not sure it's my favourite, but the hardest working accessory in my wardrobe is probably a gold sparkly belt that came free with a dress from River Island - it gets lots and lots of wear, and I always smile when I'm wearing something glittery!

What's your Style Mantra?

EVERYTHING you wear should make you smile.

Closely followed by Colour, Colour, Colour.

Who is your Style Crush?

I love Zooey Deschanel's quirky, feminine, retro style. I basically watch New Girl screaming 'OHMYGOD I LOVE HER DRESS!' throughout. I'm sure this doesn't annoy my boyfriend at all.

Big Thanks to Emily Jayne, and watch out for Mission Style's interview next Friday!

Meet Singer, Songwriter and Fashionista - Katie Hammond!!!

Introducing the incredibly talented, up and coming star Katie Hammond

Bex: So Katie could you tell me and the Bex and the City readers a little bit about you?

Katie: I started singing when I was 8, as I loved high school musical and wanted to be able to sing and perform so I entered school talent shows and took part in drama productions.
I'm now 15 and I've progressed and gained more experience, so I decided to enter a big singing competition called open mic.

I auditioned in Liverpool and progressed to the Liverpool regional finals; where I sang one of my songs called 'It's You'
I then went on to the midlands area final where I sang another original called 'Someone' and I made it to the grand final at the NEC Birmingham where I sang a song I wrote especially for the final called 'Chapters'
Along side this comp I also entered the Open Mic UK song writing comp and had the first song I ever wrote 'Someone'  releasedon Itunes.
I came 2nd in the competition and won studio recording time to record my new song 'Sandcastles' Thanks so much here's the link to the first song I ever wrote.
I'm off to BBC Radio Merseyside this morning (in January when the interview took place) for an interview about my song writing and they're going to play 'Someone' live on air.......whoop!

Bex: What outfits did you put together for the contest?
Katie: For the regional final I wore a black half fish net body from urban outfitters (one of my favourite shops) with a moschino taffeta tartan skirt.

I found the skirt online from 'children's salon', I often purchase designer children's wear as it is more affordable and actually fits better if you are size 6 to 8 and being only 5 feet tall, the length is good too. Worn with opaque tights ( has to be M&S velvets) and black platform sneakers for a glam rock chic look.

For the area final I wore a full length black skirt with a slit up the side from River Island, with an urban outfitters cropped, basque style top that has full netted sleeves.

I accessoriesed with a black neck choker that has a delicate teardrop pendant (from my mum's jewellery box).
Worn with black sneakers to keep it cheeky'

For the grand final I wore a full length sequinned dress with a side slit and lovely detail at the back.

I found it in the sale at Kendall's 50% off and took it to a dress maker to have it altered to my size, I picked it up for only £50, a bargain from  Lipsy. With... My first ever pair of heels, only small ones, black suede Chelsea boots.

Similar available online now
Bex: How would you describe your style?
Katie: I like to follow fashion and like to keep my eye on new trends to get in there first, when it becomes teenage uniform I move on quickly for my next new look haha!
I would describe my look as glamorous rock chic / cute / vintage

Bex: What inspires your style?
Katie: I Definitely celebrities, I keep an eye on what they're wearing, particularly celebrities such as Rita Ora, Rihanna and Arianna Grande

Bex: How do you choose what to wear on stage?
Katie: I choose my performance clothes to complement my style of singing. In the Open Mic grand final I sang a soul power ballad called 'Chapters' and wore a very elegant sequinned long dress much like the style of the 'Dreamgirls' musical.

Bex: Top Fashion tip for all girls
Kaite: Always quirk up the latest trend don't just follow, try and make it stand out. << Bex: LOVE this tip!!!!

Bex: What is your favourite beauty product?
Katie: I love Benefit make up and Rimmel is always good and more affordable. I recently got my first liquid eyeliner pen and it's great and so precise.

Also I don't like false eye lashes, you can easily create a much better effect from a few layers of good mascara!

Bex:  What is your favourite nail varnish colour?
Katie: Aqua blue/green

Barry M Gelly Nail Paint - £3.99

Bex: What's your top beauty tip?
Katie: Johnson's baby lotion is as good as any posh stuff for removing your make up, eyes and face and it doesn't hurt your eyes and moisturises your face all at the same time haha!

Bex: Who is your celebrity style crush?
Katie: Arianna Grande

Make sure you check out Katie's amazing song on Someone on iTunes

***In Love with Fashion Event***

Saturday 1st February In Love with Fashion had their first bloggers event and I was incredibly privileged to be on the guest list.
It was a first for me to, I've not been to a blogger even, so I was incredibly excited.

For the event I went for a bit of a cutesy look.
I teamed this tan and black polka dot playsuit, with 80 denier tights and black wedge heels.

I added a thin black with a gold buckle belt, to the outfit, to pull the material in at the waist, which gives the quite boxy playsuit some shape.
The final bit of detail was added with the addition of the white shirt under the playsuit, adding a touch of geek chic.

I got this playsuit from NewLook quite a while ago, so here are some gorgeous very similar options that are on sale at the moment.

In Love with Fashion - £32.00

BooHoo - £20.00

The afternoon with the In LOVE with Fashion team was fantastic!
We got the opportunity to find out more about the company, get to know the wonderful girls who run the show, and hear from the fabulous and super successful blogger Naomi Rowland (Naomi's Blog - http://www.twoshoesonepair.com/ )

The In Love with Fashion current collection is GORGEOUS!

I bought this very jacket, and I LOVE it! It's one of those pieces you can dress up for an evening out, dress down for a day of shopping or dressed smart for a work outfit.
I'll be debuting my jacket at London Fashion Weekend this coming Saturday!!!
I also bought this white 'CoCo made me do it' tee
I just love the slogan!!

All the bloggers who attended came away with a fab goodie bag

I also love this gold BarryM dazzle dust.
